While a CTO will focus on the technical direction, an Engineering Manager will focus on the delivery team, ensuring that the development team are productive, and most importantly, happy. They are typically responsible for:
- Team management:
hiring, onboarding, mentoring, performance reviews, career progression, and team wellbeing. - Delivery management:
ensuring projects are delivered on time, managing priorities, dependencies, and sprint planning. - Process improvement:
refining workflows, Agile practices, QA processes, release management, and communication. - Removing blockers:
helping developers stay productive by resolving operational or organisational issues. - Stakeholder communication:
coordinating with product managers, designers, leadership, and clients. - Team health & culture:
fostering collaboration, accountability, psychological safety, and sustainable working practices. - Resource planning:
balancing workloads, identifying skill gaps, and planning team capacity. - Technical oversight:
maintaining engineering standards and code quality, though often less hands-on than a Tech Lead. - Operational coordination:
incident management, support processes, and delivery reporting.
The importance of the developer experience can’t be overstated. It is an often overlooked aspect of the technical delivery team, especially as the industry as a whole pushes for speed. But when neglected it will impact the all important speed, as well as the quality of the work, and if ignored long enough will result in staff turnover, causing further delays for recruitment, and the unavoidable technical debt that comes with that. A dev team first approach is the cornerstone of any business that delivers technology as its primary goal.
