Chief Technical Officer

As your business grows, there comes a point where you need someone to keep an eye on the big picture from a technical perspective. The development team are diligently working on the code base, delivering fixes and features for the stakeholders, but rarely have the time to peer over the edge of the parapet and look into the distance.

A CTO will work with the stakeholders and development team to put a long term strategy in place. They are not there to overturn the applecart, but to work with the existing technology stack if it’s in place, and to work collaboratively with the team. A CTO provides:

• Technology strategy:
  defining the technical vision, architecture, platforms, and roadmap.
• Product & engineering leadership:
  guiding development teams, setting standards, and improving delivery processes.
• Scalability & reliability:
  ensuring systems can handle growth, uptime, performance, and security requirements.
• Technical decision-making:
  choosing frameworks, vendors, hosting, integrations, and tooling.
• Hiring & mentoring:
  recruiting developers, building engineering culture, and developing technical talent.
• Security & compliance:
  managing risk, data protection, backups, access control, and regulatory concerns.
• Budget & efficiency:
  balancing technical ambition with cost control and delivery speed.
• Cross-functional communication:
  translating technical topics for founders, stakeholders, investors, and non-technical teams.
• Innovation & competitive advantage:
  identifying opportunities where technology or AI can improve the business.
• Operational oversight:
  monitoring infrastructure, deployments, incident response, and technical debt.

A lot of their role is knowing when additional expertise is required; they need a wide knowledge base, and the ability to delegate when a specific depth of knowledge is needed. Their role is also relatively sporadic by nature, with an in-depth dive at the start into the company, the team, its existing tech stack, its ambitions, and budgets. It can then move more into oversight and monitoring as things mature.
